On The Ground

This area is located in the Pinedale region and is a great place for antelope hunters looking for the possibility of an above average antelope buck. Hunters can enjoy the long season dates and search hard for the possibility at a Boone and Crockett antelope.

In past years this area has produced some great bucks. Antelope populations in this region are improving, but on bad winter years, the overall herd numbers can fluctuate.

Rolling hills, ravines and drainages give antelope lots of places to hide and seek cover. Hunters will find numerous roads to travel and will be able to find areas with water and antelope to harvest. The south end of the unit is open country with sage and grass. The northern end of the unit has higher elevations with rocky areas to glass for antelope.

  • Roughly 688 square miles

  • 92.7% public land

  • Elevations from 6,600-11,070 feet

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

  • 8.5% Wilderness

Grass and sage are the main plants that can be found in the south end of the unit. The northern portion of the unit has mixed conifer, grass meadows in the higher elevations, pinyon/juniper, grass and sage in the foothills.

Hunters will find numerous access points throughout this area. Some roads in the unit can become hard to travel on if it rains. ATVs or side-by-side vehicles can be useful and make travel through the unit quicker. Hunters can travel Highway 28 and the Elkhorn cutoff road to access this area.

Accommodations can be found in the nearby town of Farson. Hunters can camp in the campground at Big Sandy Reservoir which is open mid-June to early September. Hunters can also camp in the Big Sandy Campground on the northwest end of the unit. Farson has a few places to purchase groceries.
