Mainly private property, hunters in this unit must be committed to gaining access on private lands or be confined to hunting a small portion of the unit. The Chalk Creek unit holds more moose than any other unit in Utah.
This area is estimated to hold a good moose population and is viewed by many as one of the top moose units in the state. Bulls with antlers reaching over 40” wide have been taken here in the past.
Found in the northeast part of Utah, the Chalk Creek Unit spreads north and west from the Uinta Mountain Range down through some smaller mountains. These smaller ranges run in every direction and are less rugged and more gradual compared to the surrounding Uinta and Wasatch ranges. Several peaks can be found reaching over 10,000 feet.
High-alpine forests consisting of Lodgepole Pines, Quaking aspen stands, and firs are found on the east side of the unit. Mountain meadows along with water sources such as rivers, streams, beaver ponds and small lakes are all found here. As elevations descend gradually to the west, aspen stands merge with large pockets of Gambel oak and Mountain sage, which begin to dominate the landscape along with isolated pockets of pine and fir at higher elevations. Moose can often be found in the thick cover of Gambel oak near water sources.
Permission to hunt private land is important for any tag holder seeking a mature bull as most of this unit is private property. Hunters are well advised to contact guides and landowners about purchasing trespass permits or hiring outfitters with access to large tracts of private property within the unit. Mirror Lake Scenic Byway 150 to the north and I-80 to the east provide the most convenient access to public land. Weber Valley Road out of Oakley runs through the heart of some private hunting land in the west and gives access to many of these private ranches.
Hunters may elect to pay a small daily fee to camp at designated campsites at Echo Reservoir, Rockport State Park, Whitney Reservoir, or just out of the unit at Smith and Morehouse Campgrounds. Hunters may set up camp in unimproved campsites next to roads in Uinta National Forest. For those who prefer motels, lodging can be found in Coalville, Kamas, Evanston, WY and the Bear River Lodge near Whitney Reservoir.
