With increasing bear densities, these units have provided hunters with more and more opportunity to harvest bears. Although there aren't as many bears as some units in the northern region, like the Kamas unit, they regularly show up on trail cameras across the unit. Bears are using high elevation forested habitats from the Sinks area,Temple Peak, and Rock Creek on the Cache unit, through the Monte Cristo area, and south to Lost Creek.
In the spring, the bear’s diet generally consists of grass, and forbs, and they will be relatively close to water sources. Most bear movement will take place during the early morning and evening hours. Their movement will continue to increase as hunts progress. The black bears’ mating season will reach its peak around the month of June. Expect bears to be covering ground and looking for opportunistic meals. Their diet will transition from grasses to more substantial foods such as acorns, pine nuts, and berries.
Leading out of the farm area in Cache Valley sits Bear River Mountain. Along the mountain range are high rolling flats and steep creek drainages leading down to the foothills. The terrain in this unit doesn’t have much variation. Farmland in the valley leads to rolling foothills and ridges separated by small creeks. The mountains are not extreme in elevation, but do have some steep creek drainages cutting through them.
Low elevations have irrigated farm land, sagebrush, and oak brush. Continuing up through the middle elevations oak brush can be found, along with sagebrush, aspen, spruce and fir trees. The higher elevations have scattered aspen groves with steep slopes covered in conifer forests. Most of the high basins are grassy with short sagebrush.
Much of the unit is part of the Cache National Forest, giving great public access. There is road access on all sides of the unit with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained, four-wheel-drive roads and ATV trails. There are some large private ranches mixed with the public land, and getting hunting access to private land can be difficult.
Most hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have decent flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. Logan is located near the unit and offers lodging.
