This is one of two units that make up the Hangman hunting area for bull moose. Cow moose hunters will not be able to hunt Unit 127 to the east as this is still a separate unit when hunting cows. Public land access in this unit is very limited; when hunting here you will need to obtain some sort of access to private property to be successful. This is not a very physical unit at all and mostly consists of rolling hills around agriculture, along with some scattered lakes and river bottoms. Hunting with a land use map or GPS is a must. If you are planning a DIY trip, you may want to consider another unit. Hunting on Spokane County State, as well as any of the National Wildlife Refuge land in this unit, is prohibited.
There is a very low moose density in this unit. If you have a tag, it’s worth knowing that the WDFW seems to receive the most number of nuisance calls regarding moose on the private land that surrounds Marshall, Four Lakes, and 7 Mile. These are small homestead properties and access will be difficult, but you can always reach out and see if they will grant you access.
Outside of the evergreens, willows, grass and occasional cottonwoods that follow the rivers and creeks throughout the unit, plan on seeing miles and miles of agriculture and CRP grass. There is very little elevation change in the unit and no dominant mountain ranges like all of the other moose units in the state. The terrain is quite broken, but nothing major -it just seems to roll across the horizon in most of the unit.
The Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is a shining diamond of timber, grass, and winding rivers that lead into small lakes found throughout the area. Unfortunately, this area is closed to hunting and the remainder of the unit is made up of mostly CRP and agriculture. If find yourself on a creek or river, you can expect to find evergreen, willows and the occasional cottonwood.
Access will very much depend on where you obtain permission to hunt and what areas will be available to you. Working with the landowners, whether they are homesteaders or ranchers, will very much depict where you will be accessing the area.
There are a few areas to camp in this unit, but all of them are at different resort-like facilities on private land. Each of these areas has limited amenities, but are really your only option as anything that resembles primitive camping is not available. There are lots of different private resorts and lakefront properties that have hotel and cabin-style accommodations. Depending on where you find access to hunt, you shouldn’t be too far from one of these locations as there are many scattered throughout the unit.
