This large unit is found in north-central Utah and just south of Salt Lake City. Elk can be found throughout the unit but in low densities and they can be scattered. Optics will play a big role in initally locating elk.
Good hunting can be found here but initially locatign elk can be tough due to their nomadic lifestyle and the sheer size of the unit.
This massive unit contains a wide array of terrain types from low desert ground to massive rocky peaks. In general, hunters will find mostly favorable conditions when it comes to cross country travel and glassing conditions but physical preparedness should be important to anyone hunting here.
Low elevations consist of the desert floor which holds little deer browse, but parts of the foothills and some of the draws in the flats have sagebrush, bitterbrush, and other browse plants that provide food and cover. Middle elevations are mainly oak brush, junipers, and sagebrush. High elevations have grassy ridges with some pines, firs, and aspens mixed with chokecherry and lots of oak brush.
Hunters can use motor vehicles to reach access points almost anywhere in the unit. Four-wheel-drive vehicles or ATVs are necessary to navigate some roads during wet or snowy weather.
Most hunters in this unit camp along dirt roads but some modern lodging can be found. Grocery and gear needs will need to be met prior to the hunt beginning.
