This triangular unit is entirely private except for three or four square miles of public land. Hunting opportunities on public land will be extremely limited, if even possible.
Very little is found here for public land hunters with black bear providing the only real opportunity. Still, with an extremely liited amount of publically accesible land the options are few and far between.
The eastern two-thirds of this unit is mostly high, open plains from 6,200-7,200 feet above sea level. An exception is the Turkey Mountain range, which is heavily wooded and rises to 8,450 feet. The western third is heavily forested hills and mountains that are mostly above 8,000 feet and rise to more than 9,000 feet.
Lowlands are covered with low bushes and grasses with cottonwoods and willows along streams. Mountains are covered with pinyons, junipers and ponderosa pines at lower elevations, ponderosa pines, spruces, firs and some aspens can be found in high elevations, as well.
A network of public and private roads provide access to ranches. Expect to pay for guided hunting trips to get on the better properties.
Most outfitters and ranchers supply food and lodging as part of the price of the hunt. Motels are available in Wagon Mound and Las Vegas.
