This hunting district is found in northwestern Montana and to the southeast of the large town of Kalispell. In the western portion Kootenai National Forest provides checkerboard sections of public lands. Be aware of private land property lines. Many old clear cuts have regenerated with new growth providing excellent forage and bedding areas for the moose population.
Flathead County has a number of 170” Boone and Crockett Class Shiras Moose listed in the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks record books. While the trophy potential is still high it has somewhat dipped in recent years and population densities have seen a similar pattern.
Most of the mountains have elevations from 5,000 to 6,000 feet. The Salish Range sits near the southern boundary below Mary Ronan Lake. Other notable lakes in the area are McGregor, Smith, Foy and Lake Rogers. Flathead River flows into Flathead Lake creating much of the eastern edge of the district. Smith Valley runs along the northern boundary and encompasses Smith Lake.
Dense old growth forest of pine, spruce and fir cover most of the mountain slopes. Clear cuts have new growth of trees, mountain shrubs and grasses. Lower elevations have short grasses with some cottonwoods and willows near creek bottoms. Swan Valley is a long marshy area. Some crops and hay are grown in a number of valleys with year round creeks flowing through them.
National Forest Service roads and trails provide good access into the limited public lands. Flathead county roads link up with Forest Service roads and system of old logging roads. With a large portion of the district being private land make sure you know where public land boundaries are located. Major highways are U.S. 2 and 93.
Lake Mary Ronan State Park, Flathead, and Kootenai National Forest provide both developed and dispersed camping. The largest community is Kalispell providing a wide variety of motel, lodges, bed & breakfasts, and hotels. Many choices of cafés, coffee shops, and restaurants are available. There is also a regional hospital, airport service, and 24/7 gas and diesel.
