On The Ground
This district is the Tobacco Root Mountains area, south of Whitehall. It is an isolated mountain range and has highways on all four sides. It is a rugged mountainous area with many high peaks and numerous pristine lakes filled with trout.
This district has a decent goat population, but is down from historic highs. The goat quality is good with a good opportunity to find a 9” billy. The Tobacco Roots have a lot of ATV and jeep trails into numerous lakes, it is a beautiful area. It receives a fair amount of summer use. Billies typically range from 8-9”
Terrain
Mountain bases in this area are around 5,000 feet and in a few short miles the peaks rise to over 10,000 feet. The lower elevations are forested but by mid slope the timber is sparse and dominated by subalpine meadows and alpine basins. Most of the basins have lakes in them and many have fish. From here to the mountain tops are talus slopes and some boulder fields. Many of the finger ridges to the top can be accessed.

Vegetation
The areas from stream bottoms to mid slop are timbered with spruce, fir and pine conifers. The next elevation is covered with subalpine grasses and scattered stunted subalpine conifers, this area is interlaced with talus slopes and rocky ridges. From here you are into the steep talus slopes leading up to the rocky peaks, only alpine forbs, moss and lichens are found in this zone.
Access
There are numerous access points into this district. There are many ATV and jeep trails into the district and most of them take you into goat country. Some of the better access points are Meadow Creek, Willow Creek, Boulder River and Wisconsin Creek. There are several others as well.

Hiking can be strenuous, it is all very steep terrain and rocky
Camping and Lodging
Options for this hunt include camping in the goat district or staying in a motel and riding in every day. There are numerous places to camp throughout this district. Many are next to subalpine lakes with trout in them. With a little bit of glassing you will spot goats from camp. Ennis, Whitehall or Twin Bridges all have restaurants, gas and motels.
