This unit is northeast of Trinidad and is private land or state land that has been leased to ranchers and is off limits to the public. Guests of ranchers hunt mule deer, whitetail deer, pronghorn antelope and elk.
Deer and antelope are not as big here as in units farther north.
Topography named Purgatoire River, Mooney Hills, Luning and Blackwell Arroyo, Tyrone Flats and Jack Canyon create very diverse landscape.
A semi-arid area of shortgrass prairie, sagebrush, yucca, sandsage, prickly cactus, bitter bush, cottonwoods, Russian thistle and irrigated crops.
No public access. Secondary and county roads get slick and rutted in wet weather. Caution approaching low areas crossing roadways during thunderstorms. Major roads that connect to county roads are U.S. Highway 350 and 160.
Trinidad provides motels, restaurants, gas, diesel, and medical facilities.
