My name is McKayla Parry and I have been the Research & Data Coordinator here at GOHUNT for six years now. Growing up in the small town of Eureka, Utah, I had some of the best hunting opportunities in my backyard. I grew up hunting mule deer with my family and have since come to love everything about hunting and hope to pass that passion on to my son. In the coming years, I hope to not only hunt more out of state, but to take my son along with me!
With Mother's Day coming up fast, here are some gear options for that mom in your life who could use the gift of hunting gear.
I have been wearing the Prana Women’s Halle Pants for years, and am always telling anyone and everyone they need a pair of these pants! I’ve been so impressed with how comfortable, breathable and durable these pants are. The lighter, more breathable material makes these an excellent option for shed hunting, scouting and early season hunts. For colder weather, I like to go up a size so I can throw on a base layer underneath them. I find myself grabbing these all the time throughout the year!
We all know that a good boot can make or break your entire hunting experience, and these boots have been a go-to for me lately! I like that these Women’s Trango Techs fit my narrow feet so well and don’t leave much room for sloshing around from side to side as many other boots have. And if your feet feel like ice the majority of the time like mine, the leather is another perk that you will appreciate in these boots!
The Sitka women’s core lightweight crew is another staple of mine during hunting season. A lot of the time, the weather in my home state of Utah can be quite temperamental; you’re never really sure if you’re going to have a scorching hot day or run into some weather, but you’ll almost always have wind where I spend a lot of my time! This shirt gives me just the right amount of protection from all of the elements and is the perfect weight to wear on its own during the early season, or as a baselayer in colder weather.
Sitka’s Mid Pro Trucker is one of my closet staples. The mesh back makes it super breathable, and the simple, sleek design can be worn on the mountain or while running errands around town.
I have come to LOVE my trekking poles over the past few years. They are great for those long hikes when you have a big pack on or are packing your kiddo in a child carrier, as they give you that extra little bit of stability and help provide some support when you’re trekking through steeper territory.
After YEARS of just throwing on a pair of your basic, everyday crew socks, I picked up a pair of the Darn Tough Women’s socks and have never looked back. These socks provide just the right amount of cushion and breathability, not to mention they fit my feet and aren’t constantly scrunching up in my boot.
Up until a few years ago, I would just use your standard pair of gloves, usually from the men’s department, and figured that I would just have to deal with all of the extra room in them and limited dexterity if I wanted to keep my hands warm. I started using the Sitka Women’s Traverse Gloves a while back and let me tell you ladies, these gloves are a must-have! They fit my fingers so much better than the bulky men’s gloves I was settling for before and I don’t feel like I have to take my gloves off every time I’m glassing which is a huge win for someone who is always cold. I also love that I can keep these on while I’m dropping a waypoint or checking my GOHUNT Maps as they have touchscreen capabilities in the thumb and forefinger. I always have a pair of these gloves stashed away in a pant or jacket pocket.
I have worn Salewas for years now, so it is no surprise that the Women’s Rapace boots are one of my top picks. If you’ve suffered a few too many ankle sprains in your day, these boots are great for that added support to help keep your ankles strong in the backcountry. Although they are slightly stiff, they still have a bit of flexibility to them and I’ve never suffered from a hotspot in my Salewas!
Another item that might make it easier on that special someone in your life is a GOHUNT Gear Shop gift card.
